A private Land Cruiser and a driver-guide who knows every track around Merzouga. Cross the erg at golden hour, listen to the Gnaoua musicians of Khamlia, take tea with a nomad family, watch fossil hunters at work and finish on a dune ridge as the sun drops into the sand sea. Ideal for photographers and families who prefer the comfort of a vehicle to a camel saddle.

Day by day

1. 1

   Morning · Around the erg

   Pick-up after breakfast and out across the hamada: the old French fortress, the fossil mines and the wells where nomads water their goats.

2. 2

   Afternoon · Khamlia and the lake

   Lunch in Merzouga, then Gnaoua music with the families of Khamlia and a drive to the seasonal salt lake, where flamingos sometimes gather.

3. 3

   Sunset · On the dunes

   Climb a high dune for sunset, try sandboarding if you like, and be back at your accommodation by early evening.
